A new home, a lot of TLC

A couple posts back I mentioned that I was (now am) going to become a home owner (To be...a home owner). It's the reason I feel so crazy right now, and have no social life. But it's a very very exciting piece of my life right now. We closed on May 17 actually so we've definitely been diving into the heart (or grime) of the house. Since it was a foreclosure there's quite a bit of work for us to do. We knew we wanted a fixer-upper for its ability to become our own through the work of our hands, and my hunny is very handy (not to mention we both come from families who have built houses).

One of the worst problems about the house is the fact that the people who lived there prior were heavy smokers. Not that they were overweight, but that they turned the walls and ceilings yellow. The carpet is the nastiest thing I've seen ever and the cabinetry still reaks like stale smoke. Besides the fact that the owners were smokers, black mold was growing around the downstairs bathroom due to a plumbling leak from the upstairs tub. These few things reveal the obvious lack of care for the house and complete neglect that home assumed by its prior owners. Sad times.

But...we love the house. It's unique and laid out well. It has no structural problems. It's planted in a beautiful yard, in a great neighborhood (and next to a HUGE dog park). And, it will be a happy home once again with a lot of TLC.

party hats and little girls

I feel very reminiscent today. Like I wish I could run back in time and enjoy a few simple moments of being a little girl again. Running around with friends, giggling, thinking boys were gross, and having fun dressing up with gal pals...well, this hasn't all changed. Remember the adorable birthday parties your mom would throw for you? Inviting all your classmates, possibly going to Chuck E. Cheese and watching the stuffed animals rock...oh wait, that's just my experience.

This year has been a little crazy for me and my birthday flew by without time to celebrate with my girlfriends. If I had a bit more time mabye I would have relived the good ole' days with party hats and fun, girly decor.

By the by, this was sooo me as a little girl.

Extravagant Honeymooning

I'm attending my second of three weddings for May this Saturday. After two months of engagement and a total of 6-8 months of not-technically dating, it'll be interesting to meet my friend's fiance for the first time at their simplistic, quick wedding. I'm so very excited to witness their union and celebrate with them! There will be quite a few unique elements to their wedding, but what I'm most fascinating by is their honeymoon. The newly betrothed will be hoping around the world for at least 3-6 months starting in Instabul on Sunday. Yikes! How I marvel at the ability to take such a trip, yet don't know how it would even be possible in my life. Full time job risking, losing of a permanent home, leaving all friends and family, errasing all savings...only scary dreams. Have you taken such a trip for your honeymoon? Was it as glamorous as I could imagine?

Well, one thing that makes their trip a little more feasible is that they have no immediate needs for home essential-type gifts, just money for the honeymoon.

To be...a home owner

So for everyone who hasn't heard (only because I haven't posted about it yet), I'm going to be a home owner in seven days! That's right 7. So my fanatic fiance got me this for my birthday (which was last week):

Which looks all cute, don't ya think? But when I opened it - reality hit - we're getting down to business!

Lots of painting - especially since the previous owners were smokers. Painting party is planned, renovation will be underway soon! Can't wait :)
